A SHOT IN THE ARM FOR HEALTH

Albuquerque , NM – Pima Medical Institute Students And Instructors Donate Time To Administer Needed Flu Shots

Students and instructors at Pima Medical Institute, 2201 San Pedro NE, Suite 100 in Albuquerque gave a needed “shot in the arm for health” recently by donating more than 146 hours of their time administering flu shots at the vaccination clinic at The University of New Mexico. Hundreds of shots per day were administered at the morning session that ran from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“It was a great experience to communicate with patients, answer their questions and find out first-hand what it’s going to be like in the field,” said Marietta Pena, a student at PMI. Fellow students Loretta Padilla, Mindy Zamora and Ashley Paz added that they gave shots to many elderly people who lots of questions and concerns.

“It was nice to be able to put their minds at ease, and it was a tremendous boost to my own confidence” said Zamora .

“Volunteerism and a dedication to improve the quality of health of the people in the community is more than just a kind gesture, it’s vital for achieving success and personal happiness in a career in healthcare,” said Popie White, campus director for the Albuquerque career college. “We’re very proud of the volunteer efforts of our students and staff and we will continue to educate skilled and humanistic healthcare professionals who contribute to the overall quality of life of their patients and the community in which they live.”

PMI offers programs for: Dental Assistant; Medical Assistant; Medical Administrative Assistant; Ophthalmic Medical Assistant; Pharmacy Technician; Physical Therapy Technician; Radiography and Veterinary Assistant. A new program in Respiratory Therapy is scheduled to begin before the end of 2004.
