Habitat for Humanity and Pima Medical Institute: A Partnership That Pays It Forward

After months of hard work by hundreds of volunteers and the future homeowners themselves, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, home sponsor Pima Medical Institute, along with dozens of community members officially welcomed the Awdahir family to their new home on May 19.

Surrounded by well-wishers, the Awdahirs pulled up to their Mesa home on a sunny Saturday morning. Once they walked through the front door, they found an additional surprise – furnishings donated by Chairman of the Board Richard Luebke Jr. and his family. Furnishings included a beautiful dining table to fit every member of the family, as well as living room furnishings and beds for each child.

Homeowners Ahmed and his wife Fatuma are African refugees and have six children. They were struggling in a small apartment and longed for a home they could truly call their own. When they heard about Habitat’s housing program from friends, they knew they needed to apply. Anxious to provide their children with ample room and a place to run and play, they are grateful to everyone who helped them make this dream a reality.

“I can’t even put into words how happy we are,” Ahmed said.

“We might even move in tonight,” added Fatuma.

“Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is grateful to the ownership and staff of Pima Medical Institute and its three valley-area campuses for being as good a sponsorship partner as we could ever dream,” said Roger Neuhaus, Chief Development Officer, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona. “They went the extra mile in every way possible to make this Habitat family’s experience in becoming homeowners extraordinary. We are truly blessed to count the PMI team among our valued friends and partners.”

Pima Medical Institute’s volunteers helped with the build of the house over a period of several months. A process that proved to be extremely rewarding for everyone.

"The students, staff and faculty of Pima Medical Institute have been thrilled to help build a Habitat House for this young family, said Richard Luebke Jr., Pima Medical Institute Chairman of the Board. “Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity has been a valuable opportunity for us to serve, learn and have fun too. The joy of seeing this family move into their dream home has been worth every dollar and every hour spent."

Pima Medical Institute and the Luebke family have a long history of philanthropy and community involvement. There are sure to be more projects like this to come.
