MESA, Ariz. (May 21, 2015) –
Pima Medical Institute’s graduation tomorrow night will send off 268 students, including 18 Mesa firefighters, who will graduate from the new paramedic program
, first introduced in the fall of 2013.
Mesa Fire and Medical Department’s Assistant Fire Chief, Mary Cameli
, will be the guest commencement speaker.
“The Mesa Fire and Medical Department was pleased to partner with Pima Medical Institute for our paramedic training,” said Cameli. “Pima Medical was very accommodating and flexible to the unique scheduling needs of our members and was very open to the partnership with our department. Having 18 additional paramedics added to our staffing will help to enhance the service we provide to our community, which helps to maintain the high level of service that we provide.”

Pima Medical worked with the fire department to create the 14-month associate degree program. The cohort will see 100 percent graduation.
“We’re really proud of these firefighter students. They balanced long work hours with school and family obligations,” said Pima Medical Institute Mesa Campus Director, Kristen Torres
. “The relationship Pima Medical has formed with the fire department has been invaluable. It was an honor to educate these men and women who do so much for the community.”
Another cohort of paramedic students will finish in August, and a new paramedic class just started on May 11. The first cohort consisted strictly of firefighters. The others are a mix of students who want to be paramedics and are already emergency medical technicians (EMT). Several of them earned their EMT certifications at Pima Medical.
“We’re excited to be continuing the paramedic program,” said Paramedic Program Director Mike Beilfuss
. “The original partnership with the Mesa fire department has resulted in a valuable program that will serve the city and surrounding area for years to come.”
