This week Pima Medical Institute is celebrating the work of our Ophthalmic Medical Technician students, faculty and staff. As the only school in Colorado and surrounding states offering the Ophthalmic Medical Technician program, we are especially proud of the program and its graduates.

You might be asking yourself, “What is an ophthalmic medical technician?” Think eyes, lasers, surgery and technology all mixed into one exciting field. Blending medicine with technology, the ophthalmic medical technician can initiate patient exams, measure and record visual stats, perform diagnostic procedures, assist in clinical and surgical settings, prepare patients for eye-transplant surgery and more.

During the Ophthalmic Medical Technician program, students have direct patient care as well as the opportunity to work alongside with – and learn from – very specialized doctors in a growing and evolving field. The courses in our program introduce students to aspects of the complete eye exam, surgical assisting, ultrasound, digital photography and light-based imaging of the eye with scanning lasers.

Lynn Leary is a 2012 graduate of the program. She says that Pima Medical was a perfect fit for her. She says it’s important for people to know that a bachelor’s degree isn’t the only path to an amazing job.

“Upon graduating from high school, the only real option presented to me by my parents was to earn a bachelor's degree from a 4-year university. I tried, but it was a difficult time of life. I dropped out after 1 year and spent 8 years waiting tables and attending a local community college. Then I learned about Pima Medical Institute's Ophthalmic Medical Technician program from one of my husband's family members.”

“Hearing about a two-year program that led directly to a career in the medical field sounded amazing! I enrolled and loved the OMT program. I didn't find the coursework difficult because I was so interested in it. I got along well with my classmates; a group of us would even arrive an hour early every day to study together. My instructors were great, and I looked forward to going to class daily!”

“I learned so much from my clinical experience and had the privilege of working with an amazing cornea specialist in the Denver area. At the end of my rotation, he offered me a position. I was promoted to lead technician, am currently in charge of the operating room, where I assist in surgeries, and I have recently been given the opportunity to step into the role of laser programmer. I learn something new every day and I could not be happier in my career.”
