October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Posted: October 10, 2014 by Elizabeth Baker

October is National Dental Hygiene Month. To celebrate, we are featuring stories and photos of Pima Medical Institute dental hygiene students and alumni.

We offer the dental hygiene associate degree at three campuses—Albuquerque, Seattle and Houston. We also offer the dental assistant certification at 11 of our campuses. To learn more, visit www.pmi.edu.

Dental hygienists play an important role within the dental care team. They work directly with patients, helping them properly care for their oral health. They clean and polish teeth, take X-rays and size for molds. Pima Medical Institute dental hygiene students study anatomy and physiology, radiography, oral pathology, patient management and more.

Meet Houston dental hygiene student, Elva Sanchez

She is bilingual in English and Spanish and the mom of one 8-year-old daughter. Elva feels she can contribute to better oral health for Hispanic patients through proper communication.

In her own words
“Prior to going into dental hygiene I was a dental assistant / assistant manager and treatment coordinator for about five to six years in the same private office. I felt that I had learned everything there was to know about being an assistant so I wanted to further my education. I decided to study it so I could share knowledge with my patients. The more I grow, the more my patients can grow as well.
I believe that if you really truly want something, there’s nothing stopping you but yourself. I have gained so much from the two years I have been a student at Pima. I never would have thought the program would be so difficult yet so rewarding. Being here I have learned so much about my own potential as a person as well as life. I feel we have the best program and clinical director as well as faculty that we could ask for. They are always here when we need them and I truly believe they want the best for us. They care about our future, not only in the dental profession but in life in general.
Also being in the program I feel I gained friends that I can now call family. After I graduate I plan to work in a dental office where I can use the skills I have gained to promote oral health. I still plan on furthering my education and getting a degree in public health in the future.
My last day of school is October 24, 2014, and our graduation day is November 21, 2014. I am counting down the days!”
