Program Objective

To develop in students the intrapersonal and professional skills needed to perform as competent entry-level occupational therapy assistants through didactic instruction, hands-on laboratory practice, and clinical experiences. Students have the opportunity to develop professional skills in activity analysis, growth and development, human occupations, principles of occupational therapy, therapeutic modalities, administrative procedures, and ethics and laws governing the practice of occupational therapy. Graduates of this program at the El Paso and Houston campuses receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree, while graduates at other PMI campuses receive an Associate of Occupational Science. Graduates of accredited OTA programs are eligible to apply to take the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistant (COTA) administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

Hybrid Learning Options

For students who need more flexibility in their schedules, hybrid learning options are available at select campuses. Hybrid learning combines in-person instruction with online learning. Students can engage with course materials at times and in environments that suit their individual circumstances, such as balancing employment, family responsibilities or geographic constraints. However, externship hours must be completed entirely in person because hands-on clinical experience is essential for developing the practical skills and confidence needed for real-world patient care.

*Not all programs offer hybrid learning options; Hybrid education options not available at all campuses

FAQs About our Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

An occupational therapy assistant is a licensed health care professional who works under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist to help patients of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities participate in everyday activities. Patients may be working to regain skills after an injury, rebuild independence after illness, or develop new strategies for managing a disability or chronic condition.
As an occupational therapy assistant, you will work directly with patients to carry out treatment plans developed by a licensed occupational therapist. Day-to-day responsibilities may include guiding patients through therapeutic activities, documenting patient progress, assisting with adaptive equipment, supporting patients across mental and physical health and communicating with supervising occupational therapists about patient outcomes.
An occupational therapist (OT) holds a master’s or doctoral degree and is responsible for evaluating patients and developing individualized treatment plans. An occupational therapy assistant (OTA) holds an associate degree and works under the direction of a licensed OT to carry out those treatment plans. Pima Medical’s OTA associate degree program prepares you to enter the field as a certified, entry-level occupational therapy assistant.

In the Occupational Therapy Assistant associate degree program, you will learn both the clinical and administrative skills needed to work confidently in a professional occupational therapy setting. Coursework covers occupational therapy principles, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic modalities, mental health practice, physical health practice, pediatric practice, growth and development, documentation and administrative procedures. You will also complete hands-on clinical fieldwork in a real occupational therapy environment before graduation.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant associate degree program takes approximately 20 months to complete. The total program length is 80 weeks. Program hours total 1,712 at all campuses, except the Las Vegas campus which totals 1,757 program hours.
Graduates of the program from this school are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

For students who need more flexibility in their schedules, hybrid learning options are available for the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at select campuses. This format combines in-person instruction with online coursework, allowing you to complete academic coursework at times and in environments that fit your schedule. Fieldwork hours, however, must be completed entirely in person, since hands-on clinical experience is essential to developing the practical skills and confidence needed for real-world patient care.

*Hybrid learning is not offered at every campus; contact your local Pima Medical campus to confirm availability for the Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
Applicants should have a high school diploma or recognized GED equivalent. A high school transcript or evidence of satisfactory GED completion will be requested prior to starting classes. Applicants must complete an entrance exam and pass with a minimum score, though this requirement may be waived in some cases. All applicants must be interviewed prior to acceptance. Applicants who are under legal age must have written approval from a parent or legal guardian. Visit our Admissions Requirements page for full details.
Eligible students may be able to fund their education through federal financial aid programs, including Federal Pell Grants, federal student loans and scholarships. Speak with our financial services team or visit our Financial Aid page to learn more about the options available to you.
