Follow your passion for a career in healthcare and make a difference.

Carole was a retiree after working for 25 years in a job that she found boring. She always loved animals and started a new career as a veterinary assistant after graduating from our Houston campus. She wanted to help animals and now she’s fulfilling her dream by working with terminally ill people to find forever homes for their beloved pets. Check out her story below.

“After 25 years in a job that bored me, I was offered early retirement and took it. I’ve always had an interest in helping animals, so I arranged a tour of Pima Medical Institute and signed up for the Veterinary Assistant program. I hadn’t been in college in more than 30 years, but the instructors made it easy and the staff was so helpful and friendly. I received a quality education in a short amount of time.

I completed my externship at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, a large open admissions shelter, and was hired directly out of my externship. I found I had a real interest in shelter medicine and management. After eight years, I was offered a position as a medical manager for a cat shelter in the area. During the two and a half years I held this position, I helped the shelter grow and flourish accomplishing their goals and further serving the cat community. I had many success stories there.

Currently, I am the Cat Care Coordinator for a small, growing shelter. We take animals from terminally ill people and find forever homes for them, relieving these people of a very difficult decision at the end of life. Our organization was started by a hospice nurse who saw the trauma these people went through parting with their beloved pet.

Pima Medical gave me the background and skills to go far in my career. I love what I do and they’ve given me 11 years of an incredible, rewarding career!”
