Pima Medical Institute to open New Campus in El Paso

Posted: February 3, 2016 by Elizabeth Baker

EL PASO, TEXAS (Feb. 3, 2016) – Pima Medical Institute’s El Paso campus is getting a new home.

After operating on Burnham Road, the school will relocate this fall to a new location in El Paso and offer even more healthcare career education programs.

Upon closure of Anamarc College in June of 2014, Pima Medical stepped in and began teaching the former college’s 76 occupational therapy students that were left without hopes of graduating. Pima Medical rehabbed a building at 8375 Burnham Road, enabling the students to successfully realize their professional dreams. Eventually the school added two more programs—medical assistant and medical administrative assistant, providing more educational opportunities.

Beginning in September 2016, those classes will move to the new campus, located conveniently along Interstate 10, at 6926 Gateway East—the building that once housed El Paso Saddleblanket Co. El Paso represents Pima Medical’s fourth renovation project as a result of helping other colleges that were facing closures. It also revitalized similarly styled buildings in Aurora, Colo., Houston and Albuquerque, N.M., creating spacious, modern learning environments for their healthcare training programs.

The new campus is a one-story, 40,000-square-feet facility with ample parking, located directly across from I-10 and the Cielo Vista Mall.

“Pima Medical Institute’s selection of this location was primarily driven by its central proximity to our student population and employer partners,” said CEO and President, Fred Freedman. “Convenience for those we serve was the major driver of our decision.”

More programs will be added to the new location, such as certificate programs in dental assisting, pharmacy technician, veterinary assisting, central sterile processing and phlebotomy. Pima Medical will also seek approval to offer its associate degree programs in nursing, physical therapist assistant, respiratory therapy, radiography, and veterinary technician. It will continue to teach occupational therapy, medical assisting and medical administrative assistant programs.

“We expect to offer a robust menu of training opportunities for in-demand healthcare professions,” Freedman said. “Additional healthcare programs are also being considered based on employment opportunities for graduates.”

The new campus will offer access to new hands-on laboratories, medical and lecture amenities.

“We’re excited to bring a balanced program mix to the El Paso community of students and employers,” Freedman said. “As one of the nation’s most respected healthcare-only training providers, we anticipate outstanding student success in El Paso. We've gotten nothing but positive feedback.”

Founded in 1972 in Tucson, Ariz., Pima Medical Institute offers a wide variety of certificate programs, as well as associate degrees and online bachelor degrees. It has 16 campuses across the west, located in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Montana, Washington, Colorado and California.
