Paying for a Veterinary Assistant program: Funding Options

Follow your passion for a career in healthcare and make a difference.

If working with animals is where you are headed, figuring out how to pay for a veterinary assistant program should not be the thing that holds you back. Pima Medical Institute accepts federal financial aid if you qualify, and several additional funding sources exist specifically for certificate and career training programs like this one.

From federal grants and loans to state programs, scholarships, and employer assistance, there are more options available than you might expect. Read on to see what may be available to you.

What Pima Medical’s Veterinary Assistant Program Costs

Pima Medical Institute’s Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program has an on-time completion of approximately nine months. Total program costs vary by campus but run roughly $18,823–$20,291, covering tuition, registration, textbooks, uniforms and a technology fee. That covers hands-on lab training, access to animal care simulations and a 240-hour clinical externship before graduation.

Federal financial aid may cover a portion of the the  cost of an educational program if you know which programs to apply for and submit applications early. The institution does not guarantee eligibility for federal financial aid.

Start with the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the single form that may unlock federal grants, federal loans, and most state and institutional aid. Pima Medical Institute participates in federal Title IV aid programs, which means you can apply those funds directly toward tuition and fees if you qualify.

Filing the FAFSA early matters. Some funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and both state and institutional deadlines often fall before the federal deadline of June 30. File your application as soon as the form opens each October for the following academic year.

Submit the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. You will need to know your Social Security number, and some basic household financial data.

Pima Medical Institute’s financial services team can walk you through what to expect based on your specific FAFSA results.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is money you do not repay. It goes to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. The maximum award for 2026–2027 is $7,395 per year. Your actual award depends on your student aid index, enrollment status, and program length.

Pima Medical Institute’s financial services team can walk you through what to expect based on your specific FAFSA results.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The FSEOG is a campus-based grant for undergraduates with the lowest Student Aid Index (SAI) and highest need who also receive a Pell Grant. Unlike the Pell Grant, which reaches every eligible student, FSEOG funds are limited to the amount Pima Medical Institute receives from its annual U.S. Department of Education allocation.

State Grants

Pima Medical Institute’s Veterinary Assistant program is available across multiple states, each with its own grant programs. Two state-specific options available at select Pima Medical campuses include:

  • California — The Cal Grant is a state-funded award that does not require repayment. Applicants must complete the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application by the state deadline and meet financial and GPA requirements. Contact your local California campus finance office for details.

If you are in another state, check with your state’s higher education agency for current grant programs and deadlines. Your FAFSA submission automatically routes your information to your state aid office.

Federal Direct Loans

Federal student loans come in two forms, subsidized and unsubsidized.

  • Subsidized loans are need-based; the government covers interest while you are enrolled at least half-time.
  • Unsubsidized loans are available regardless of need, but interest begins accruing immediately.

Both require repayment after graduation, though the interest rates and terms are generally more favorable than private loan options.

Borrow only what you need. For an estimated nine-month program, your loan balance could be manageable if you borrow conservatively and understand what your monthly payment will look like once repayment begins.

Federal PLUS Loans

Parents of dependent undergraduate students may be eligible to borrow a Federal Direct PLUS Loan to cover costs not met by other aid. The maximum available aid is calculated based on the student’s cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid received. Aid may not exceed $20,000 per academic year, with a lifetime limit of $65,000 per eligible student. Unlike Direct Loans, PLUS Loans require a credit check, and interest accrues immediately. Repayment typically begins within 60 days of the final disbursement for the academic year. Because PLUS Loans carry a higher interest rate than Direct Loans, exhaust subsidized and unsubsidized options first.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides part-time employment to students with financial need. Pima Medical Institute will attempt to place students in jobs related to their program of study, with work schedules arranged around class times. Earnings go directly to the student and can be used to cover education costs. Eligibility is based on financial need and fund availability. Apply through Pima Medical’s Student Finance Office after completing the FAFSA.

Veterans’ Benefits

Pima Medical Institute is approved to offer various training programs for eligible veterans. Students applying for veterans’ benefits must provide verification of high school graduation or a GED and official transcripts for any prior postsecondary education. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs or visit our Military Benefits and Funding Options page for more information and next steps.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)  is a federally funded program that helps job seekers access education and career training, including those facing barriers such as limited work history, low income, or job displacement. You may be eligible for funding that covers part or all of tuition at an approved training provider. Contact your campus student finance officer or your local American Job Center to find out whether WIOA funding is available in your area. You can locate your nearest American Job Center at careeronestop.org

Pima Medical Institutional Scholarships

Pima Medical has offered program-specific scholarships at select campuses in the past, and additional scholarship opportunities may be available. Visit the Pima Medical scholarships page to see what is currently open and to stay informed as new opportunities are added.

As a past scholarship example, Pima Medical Institute’s East Valley campus has previously awarded an annual $25,000 scholarship to current Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Technician students. Applicants were required to be enrolled and entering their first or second professional sequence and to submit a one to three-page essay covering their reasons for choosing the veterinary field, their career goals, community service involvement, and why they merit the award.

Employer Tuition Assistance

Some veterinary clinics and animal hospitals offer tuition reimbursement or education assistance as part of their benefits packages. If you are already working in a veterinary setting, ask your employer whether they cover continuing education costs. Some clinics specifically offer training for employees pursuing formal credentials to assume expanded responsibilities.

Private Educational Loans

If federal aid does not cover your full program costs, private educational loans are another option to consider. Unlike federal loans, private loans are offered by banks and lending institutions and are not administered through the FAFSA. Eligibility is based on your credit history rather than financial need, and a cosigner may be required if your credit history is limited.

The U.S. Department of Education recommends exhausting all federal aid options before turning to private loans, as federal loans generally offer lower interest rates and more flexible repayment protections. To compare private loan options and understand what to look for, visit StudentAid.gov or speak with Pima Medical’s financial services team at (800) 477-7462.

What Your Funding Is Paying For

Pima Medical’s Veterinary Assistant program covers both clinical and administrative training. Lab training includes real equipment and, at select campuses, animals from nonprofit and rescue partners. The curriculum moves through animal anatomy, pharmacology, surgical assisting, diagnostic imaging, and office procedures.

The program concludes with a 240-hour externship at a veterinary site coordinated through Pima Medical’s Career Services department. This hands-on experience is your opportunity to apply everything you have learned in a real clinical setting, build professional relationships in the field, and demonstrate your skills to potential employers before graduation.

Graduates who meet academic and additional admission requirements may be eligible to continue into Pima Medical Institute’s Veterinary Technician associate degree program. The Veterinary Assistant certificate is a prerequisite for the Veterinary Technician program at Pima Medical Institute.

How Financial Aid Works at Pima Medical Institute

Pima Medical Institute’s Financial Services team works with each student individually to determine what funding solutions they qualify for and how it applies to their program costs. They guide students through the FAFSA process, help identify scholarship opportunities, and outline any remaining balance after all eligible federal student aid is applied.

Once the FAFSA is processed and a financing plan is established, applicable Title IV funds are credited directly to the student’s account. In accordance with federal disbursement and authorization rules, if the federal student aid exceeds the program’s direct cost, the remaining balance may be refunded to you for other educational costs associated with the program.
