Pima Medical Institute announced that Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director, Laura Sage, has been named to the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). She is the first Program Director from Pima Medical appointed to the committee.

Sage, a full-time Physical Therapist (PT) for more than three decades, had worked with many Pima Medical students and graduates. After guest lecturing and serving on the advisory board for more than a year, she decided to move to the education side of the profession and accepted the role as Pima Medical’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Director of Clinical Education in Denver. She joined the San Marcos campus after it began developing its PTA program in 2020.

“Our program in San Marcos was still in its infancy stage when I came on board,” said Sage. “As Program Director, I was able to help make sure the program did everything it needed to earn its accreditation and ensure our first cohort was able to begin successful careers upon graduation.”

CAPTE is the one accrediting body for all Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant programs in the United States. In order for students to be able to take their licensing exam, no matter the state, they have to graduate from a CAPTE-accredited school. Once accredited, every program has to go through a reaccreditation every 10 years.

The Commission has a series of standards in eight different categories. Each school has to submit a report that illustrates how they are meeting the standards. Each school will also have a site visit. Each visit team consists of an educator, clinician and administrator. Their visit report is then submitted to CAPTE, and the commissioners decide if the program is indeed in compliance with the standards.

Sage says being appointed to the Commission is an honor, not just for her individually, but also for Pima Medical Institute.
