Our Medical Assistant Program: What You Will Learn
Pima Medical’s Medical Assistant Certificate Program trains you for both the clinical and administrative sides of the role. The curriculum moves through four professional sequences, each building on the last, covering everything you need to work confidently in a San Diego medical office, clinic or specialty practice.
You will cover:
- Anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology so you can read a chart, follow a physician’s instructions and document patient information accurately
- Medical office management, billing, and coding to handle the administrative work that keeps a practice running
- Physical examination techniques and surgical procedures so you can assist confidently during patient exams and minor in-office procedures
- Pharmacology and medical law and ethics to understand medications and the legal responsibilities that come with working in patient care
- Phlebotomy and laboratory procedures including blood draws, specimen handling, and basic diagnostic testing
- Medical specialty procedures across areas like pediatrics, women’s health, and other focused practice settings

Clinical Externships in San Diego: Real Experience, Local Connections
The final component of the Medical Assistant certificate program is a clinical externship, which places you in a real medical office, clinic or hospital in the San Diego area before you graduate.
The externship allows you to get hands-on experience you need by taking vitals, prepping patients, running lab tests, updating charts and handling the responsibilities that medical assistants are hired to carry out every day. By the time you finish the externship, you have real clinical experience on your resume and a professional reference in the San Diego healthcare community.
Some students are offered jobs directly by their externship site, and others walk away with strong letters of recommendation and connections they would not have had otherwise.
On-Campus and Hybrid Learning Options
Both the Chula Vista and San Marcos campuses offer the Medical Assistant certificate program in on-campus and hybrid formats.
The on-campus format is full in-person instruction, which works well if you prefer a structured daily schedule and face-to-face learning.
The hybrid format is built for students who need more flexibility. In the hybrid format, in-person instruction takes place two days a week with online learning three days a week. Foundational lecture content is completed online, while labs and clinical skills training take place on campus. Your externship is always completed in person regardless of which format you choose.

Certification: Your Credential in a Competitive Market
California does not require medical assistants to hold a state license, but most employers prefer or require national certification. The two most recognized credentials are the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants and the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists.
Both exams test the core competencies you build throughout the Medical Assistant certificate program: clinical skills, administrative procedures, and general medical knowledge.
What Does It Cost?
Total program cost at both the Chula Vista and San Marcos campuses is $19,675.* That includes tuition, textbooks, lab supplies, technology fees, and uniforms. There are no surprise costs once you are enrolled.

Federal financial aid is available for those who qualify, including Federal Pell Grants, federal student loans, and scholarships. The financial services team can walk you through what you might qualify for and what your actual out-of-pocket cost will be after aid is applied.
The Job Outlook for Medical Assistants in San Diego
Nationally, the numbers are strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 12 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations, with approximately 112,300 openings expected each year. The median annual wage for medical assistants was $44,200* as of May 2024.
