Pima Medical Institute now offering the Occupational Therapy Assistant Degree in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 16, 2016) – Pima Medical Institute is pleased to announce it has added the occupational therapy assistant associate degree to the Las Vegas campus. Enrollment has already begun.

The occupational therapy assistant (OTA) provides care to patients with various disabilities. The hands-on assistance allows patients to live more independent lives. OTAs also help patients regain abilities they may have lost due to an injury. A typical patient might be elderly or struggling with physical or developmental challenges.

The profession is experiencing growth and the state of Nevada was lacking an occupational therapy assistant educational program, according to Pima Medical Institute Las Vegas campus Director, Sam Gentile.

“Because there is no occupational therapy assistant program in Nevada, this created a huge attraction,” said Gentile. “An entirely new suite is being built here on our campus to accommodate the training. It will be next to our physical therapy assistant suite and will have a classroom, laboratory, resource area, student lounge and more.”

The laboratory will be set up to mirror that of an everyday living situation, so that students can learn in a real-world setting. It will include items such as a bed, dishwasher, sink, stove, refrigerator, bathroom, complete with a tub, washer and dryer and other items that would be found in a household.

“The students will have the opportunity to practice in a realistic environment,” said Occupational Therapist Assistant Program Director, Heather Norman, MS, OTR/L. “They’ll also have the opportunity to interact with physical therapist assistant students, as OTAs work closely with them in the field.”

The associate degree program takes approximately 20 months to complete. Classes include growth and development, anatomy and physiology, communications for health professions, fundamentals of occupational therapy, and pediatric practice.

“I believe this program will provide a much needed service for the local healthcare community,” said Norman. “The experience and expertise of our staff, in combination with the curriculum, will result in a successful program with successful graduates.”

The OTA career is expected to grow, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. From now through 2024, it is predicted to grow by 40 percent nationally, which is much higher than the average job growth. The increase is attributed to an aging population that will require therapeutic services.

Pima Medical Institute also offers the OTA program at several other campuses, including in Houston and El Paso, TX, Denver, Mesa and Tucson, Ariz., and Renton, Wash. To learn more about the OTA program, visit http://pmi.edu/Programs/Associate/Occupational-Therapy-Assistant.
