7 Ways to Give During Thanksgiving

Ideas to help you give thanks, and make a difference this holiday.

At Pima Medical Institute we have a lot of reasons to give thanks. For more than 45 years, we have dedicated ourselves to healthcare education because we want students to become the best healthcare professionals possible. Our students are respected as some of the most qualified professionals in their fields, and are often employed at preferred hospitals, clinics and facilities – making a daily difference in the communities they serve.

In addition to taking stock of why we are thankful, we thought we’d share some ideas to help you give thanks, and make a difference this holiday.

Give Time – Nursing homes don’t take a break on the holidays. Think about those who might be spending this holiday alone and how you could brighten their day. From playing cards, to just sitting and talking, you might find the day is even more rewarding for you! Here are some details on how volunteering at nursing homes works – and while you’re there, don’t forget to tell the staff hello. Remember, they’re probably missing time with their family to care for others’ loved ones.

Give Blood – The need for blood donors is constant, and as we head into the winter months, the need becomes even greater. It only takes about an hour out of your day to literally save a life. Go to the American Red Cross Website for more information and locations near you.

Give Hope – The holidays aren’t a joyful time for everyone. Take a minute to encourage others that may be struggling at home, in school or on a job. Let them know you care. Perhaps give them an invite to Thanksgiving dinner, or offer to spend some time with them, if they don’t have family nearby.

Give Cheer – Send a personal note or card to someone who has been on your mind or might need a little cheering up this season. Nothing says, “I’m thinking about you,” like a handwritten note or special card just for them.

Give Companionship – Visit a local animal shelter. Shelters are always in need of volunteers to help ease the load. Think about bringing new toys and food with you too. Supplies are always needed. If you’ve got the time, many shelters are also looking for people willing to foster a dog or cat while they search for a forever home. Here are some additional ways you can help an animal shelter near you.

Give Support – Put together a care package for the military. Reminding our military members that we are thinking of them is easier than you might think. This article from military.com will help you create a care package, without breaking the bank.

Give Cash – Don’t have spare time, but still want to make a difference? Now is a great time of year to support an organization that is in need, and it’s often tax deductible. If you have a specific charity in mind, great. If not, take a look at Charity Navigator and pick one that is meaningful to you.  Even if you can’t donate your time, knowing the organization of your choice is being helped is something to be thankful for.
