HOUSTON (Jan. 5, 2016) – Pima Medical Institute has added the patient care technician program to its Houston campus, providing students with another avenue into the healthcare profession.
The patient care technician (PCT) program is for those interested in a career field that is seeing growth in settings such as hospitals, dialysis facilities and home health care agencies.
“Our new PCT program will provide many diverse career opportunities,” said Pima Medical Institute Houston campus Director, Phil Heine. “The curriculum is very precise, offering specialized training as an emergency room technician, a hemodialysis technician and in electrocardiography.”
The program is available to those who are certified nursing assistants. A PCT career provides graduates with several options and allows them to have very hands-on jobs. They work on a daily basis with patients, their families, doctors and nurses and are responsible for a variety of tasks, such as taking vital signs, administering electrocardiographs (ECGs), drawing blood, removing sutures and staples, managing wound care, operating dialysis equipment and much more.
PCT careers may include hospital caregiver, emergency department technician, patient advocate, burn technician, dialysis technician or ECG monitoring technician.
“For graduates of this program, there is a wide spectrum of jobs in doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals,” said Heine. “Our program also includes a seven-week externship, which helps to better acquaint students with their career options.”
Courses during the PCT program include phlebotomy, emergency room training, infection control, ECG training, hemodialysis concepts and communication.
