Pima Medical Institute is proud to announce the new surgical technology associate degree, now being offered at the Denver, Colorado campus.

The surgical technology program educates students for a career in the operating room, where they are an integral part of the healthcare team, preparing and sterilizing the room before surgery, assisting surgeons and other healthcare providers during procedures, overseeing the use and assembly of equipment, supplies and instrumentation.

“After extensive research, we concluded there is a definite need for highly trained surgical technologists in the Denver area,” said Ryan Minic, Pima Medical Institute Denver campus director.

Pima Medical Institute surgical technologist students learn the use of lasers, physics and robotics in the surgical setting, expanding their employment options. The 18-month program prepares graduates to work in a number of settings, including hospitals, outpatient surgery centers or plastic surgery offices.

Students are trained by professional instructors who have worked in the field themselves. They spend their class time in a high-tech, modern laboratory that mimics an operating room, giving them a realistic and accurate feel for what it will be like once they’re on the job. They are educated in the step-by-step procedures all surgical technicians must follow before and after a procedure, and obtain a deep knowledge of the technology, supplies and instrumentation used by the healthcare team.

Surgical technology courses include endoscopic principles and procedures, surgical patient care, clinical preparation and practice and advanced surgical procedures.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of the surgical technologist is expected to grow 30 percent nationally through 2022, which is faster than the average profession in the U.S.* Surgical technician employment opportunities are growing due to advances in medical technology, which have made surgery safer, allowing for more illnesses and injuries to be treated by operation.
