Surgical Technologists: Unsung Heroes of the Healthcare Team

Follow your passion for a career in healthcare and make a difference.

Ask someone the importance of a surgical technologist, and they might not be able to tell you. Surgical technologists play a vital role on the healthcare team. You might even call them unsung heroes.

Also known as operating room technicians, surgical technologists assist with operations. They prepare rooms, arrange equipment and help doctors during surgeries, usually in hospitals, but sometimes in outpatient surgical centers.

Because of the important role these medical professionals play, we wanted to shed some additional light onto the duties these everyday superheroes are responsible for when it comes to the safety of their patients. Working side-by-side with surgeons and nurses in the operating room, surgical technologists make sure each procedure goes as smoothly and precisely as possible. They also count medical tools and supplies to ensure surgeons do not leave anything behind.

Pima Medical Institute offers a Surgical Technology associate degree program at its Chula Vista, Denver, Phoenix and Tucson campuses. Through hands-on learning, students can earn their degree in approximately 18 months while learning from highly experienced faculty in real-world laboratory classrooms. Add to that, field experience through clinical externships and students will be prepared to start their careers immediately.

Surgical Technology is an in-demand and exciting career, and employers are looking for qualified people to fill the roles.* This job is proof that not all super heroes wear capes, sometimes they wear scrubs.
