At Pima Medical Institute, our Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant (BSPTA) program is designed to empower working PTAs to take the next step in their careers. Some choose to go into leadership, education, research or even advanced clinical practices.

These graduates exemplify what’s possible with dedication, compassion and a commitment to lifelong learning. Each has used their BSPTA degree to make a difference not only for their patients, but for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Ashlee’s Story: Leadership Through Education

Ashlee Artus, PTA, BSPTA

Ashlee Artus, a 2016 graduate of the BSPTA program, initially sought an affordable and flexible way to earn her bachelor’s degree while continuing to work. The fully online format made it possible and her degree became a launching pad for leadership.

After graduation, Ashlee quickly advanced from area manager to regional director of operations for one of the nation’s largest third-party therapy contractors. Her role took her across the country, allowing her to see the impact of physical therapy in diverse settings.

Eventually, she decided to return home and give back in a new way as an instructor in Pima Medical’s Las Vegas campus PTA program. “I’m thoroughly enjoying teaching and sharing my passion,” she said. “I see many fruitful years ahead helping students find their own paths in this rewarding field.”

Carmen’s Story: Building a Business and Leading With Purpose

Carmen Marquez, PTA, BSPTA, MSOL, DSIII

A proud three-time Pima Medical graduate, Carmen Marquez earned her PTA (2014), BSPTA (2017) and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL, 2023) degrees.

Her journey began with a desire for professional growth and turned into a career filled with leadership and advocacy. “After completing my BSPTA program, I was promoted,” she shared.

Carmen and her husband went on to open their own outpatient rehabilitation facility, where she serves as the director of physical therapy. She also states that earning her MSOL degree helped to strengthen her leadership and community advocacy skills.

“I’ve learned so much about the kind of leader I am and the kind of leader I want to be,” she said. “This degree gives me credibility and helps me serve my rural community more effectively.”

Nosleidy’s Story: Taking the Next Step Toward a DPT

Nosleidy Ramirez Barzaga, PTA, BSPTA

For Nosleidy Ramirez Barzaga, the BSPTA program was about growth and innovation. She credits the program with deepening her research skills and enhancing her ability to communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals.

“The BSPTA program gave me the tools to be more efficient in my workplace,” she said. “It helped me generate better rehabilitation processes and think more critically.”

Her dedication and continued learning paid off as she was accepted into an accelerated Doctor of Physical Therapy program. A goal she attributes to the solid foundation built at Pima Medical.

Jennifer’s Story: From PTA to Professor

After nearly a decade working in acute care as a physical therapist assistant, Jennifer Preble wanted to advance her career but didn’t want to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. That’s when she discovered Pima Medical’s online BSPTA program.

“The BSPTA program improved my skills in pharmacology, research and evidence-based practice,” she said. “My instructors were always helpful and available.”

Her education opened new doors including a full-time faculty position at Pueblo Community College, where she now teaches neurology, basic patient care and physical therapy principles. She also continues to work in acute care a few times a month to keep her clinical skills sharp.

Jennifer’s supervisor shared that her BSPTA degree made her a standout candidate for the teaching position. “I’m grateful for the education I received at Pima Medical,” she said. “It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally.”

Advancing Careers Through Education

From teaching and management to clinical leadership and entrepreneurship, these stories show the diverse paths BSPTA graduates can take.

Pima Medical’s online BSPTA program is designed for licensed Physical Therapist Assistants who want to build on their experience and move into new professional opportunities. Courses focus on advanced clinical knowledge, leadership, research and communication, which are all taught by experienced faculty who understand the demands of the profession.

Whether your goal is to teach, lead or continue your education, the BSPTA program provides the flexibility, support and depth needed to take the next step.
