Pima Medical Institute’s Houston Campus Now Offering Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

Posted: June 17, 2015 by Elizabeth Baker

HOUSTON (June 17, 2015) – Pima Medical Institute, a premier private medical college with 16 campuses across the western United States, recently introduced the occupational therapy assistant associate degree to its Houston campus. The 20-month program will prepare students to help patients with different disabilities and challenges accomplish daily activities in order to live independent lives.

“The occupational therapy assistant career is a growing one and offers good job prospects to graduates,” said Houston Campus Director, Phil Heine. “Houston is known for its health care industry. We will be educating and preparing them to enter that workforce.”

Occupational therapy assistants (OTA) work alongside occupational therapists, providing assistance that allows patients to function independently in their homes, communities and at work. They also help patients regain skills lost due to injury. A typical patient might be elderly or struggling with physical or developmental challenges.

The profession is experiencing growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s expected to grow by 41% from 2012 to 2022. That growth is due to a number of factors, including a growing elderly population.

Pima Medical OTA students will study under the instruction of experienced educators in hands-on classrooms that are fully equipped with the items they need to provide the best care upon entering the workforce. They will take courses in subjects like anatomy and physiology, occupational analysis, principals of occupational therapy in mental health, and growth and development.

“Pima Medical Institute has a good reputation for educating mature, knowledgeable health care professionals,” said OTA Program Director, Barbara Palmer. “Once they graduate, they’ll have career opportunities in rehabilitation clinics, schools, hospitals, mental health facilities and skilled nursing facilities.”

Pima Medical is now enrolling students for the first OTA cohort, to being Aug. 17. The program is also offered at several other campuses, including Denver, Mesa and Tucson, Ariz., El Paso, TX, and Renton, Wash.
