What is an Ophthalmic Medical Technician?

Follow your passion for a career in healthcare and make a difference.

Ophthalmic medical technicians (OMTs)—work with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care by performing eye-related clinical tasks such as instructing patients about medications, tests and procedures. But, more than just administrative tasks, as an OMT you can also assist in the performance of vision and diagnostic tests.

Pima Medical Institute’s OMT associate degree program in Denver is the only program of its kind in Colorado and surrounding states. Students enrolled in the program can expect to have direct patient care as well as the opportunity to work alongside and learn from doctors in a specialized and evolving field. The courses in our program introduce students to all aspects of what to expect as a career as an OMT.

This exciting career blends medicine with technology. As an OMT you can initiate patient exams, measure and record visual stats, perform diagnostic procedures, assist in clinical and surgical settings, prepare patients for eye-transplant surgery and more.

You’ll have the opportunity to work everywhere from hospitals to clinics, multispecialty offices, private practices and even refractive surgery centers. And, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics it’s a career field that is continuing to grow. Employment of ophthalmic medical technicians is projected to grow by 14 percent by 2029.  As a significant portion of the U.S.’s population continues to age, the demand for ophthalmology services will grow.

At Pima Medical, our Ophthalmic Medical Technician training program will prepare you for the national technicians certifying exam administered by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Graduates may also pursue additional certification in ophthalmic photography, ultrasound, low vision and surgical assisting.

So, if you’re interested in being a key part of the team that helps patients with their eye health, check out our OMT program now.
